Sketching the Map

This workflow will walk you through removing the sample data and adding your own.

Removing sample data

This sample data has been provided for context, and to give you a sample data schema and symbology. Once you are familiar with the sample data, remove the features from the individual layers, and use them to add your own.

  1. Add a basemap.
    • Select Add Data, navigate to your basemap, and select Add.
    • Select Add Data > Add Basemap select your basemap, and select Add.
  2. Once you are familiar with the sample data, remove the features.
    1. In ArcToolbox, open the Delete Features tool.
    2. For the Input Features field, select the first layer from which to remove the features.
    3. Click OK.
    4. Repeat steps 1-3 for each layer.
  3. If you want to save this document as a template, save a copy now.

Adding your data

  1. Open the Editor toolbar.
  2. On the Editor toolbar, select Editor and Start Editing.
  3. In the Create Features pane, select the feature template you wish to use.
  4. Click on the map to place points features or draw line and area features.
  5. If you draw building footprints, you can automate the digitizing of the structure points by running the Feature to Point tool.
  6. When complete, select Editor and Save Edits.
  7. Save the map document.
