Get started with Military Tools for ArcGIS

Military Tools for ArcGIS provides fundamental tools for coordinate conversion, distance and direction calculations, gridded reference graphics creation, military symbology in ArcGIS Pro, and visibility analysis. It contains add-ins for ArcMap or ArcGIS Pro, a geoprocessing Python toolbox, and a Python package that make the geoprocessing tools accessible as system tools in any ArcGIS Pro project you create.

Install the add-in for ArcGIS Pro

To install the Military Tools for ArcGIS add-in in ArcGIS Pro, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the folder that corresponds to your version of ArcGIS Pro in the ArcGIS Pro folder.
  2. Double-click the MilitaryToolsforArcGISPro.esriAddinX file.
  3. Click Install Add-In.

    The Installation Succeeded window appears.

  4. Click OK.
  5. Start ArcGIS Pro.

    The Military Tools tab is added to ArcGIS Pro.

Upgrading to Military Tools for ArcGIS 3.3.1 or newer on ArcGIS Pro

To ensure complete functionality of Military Tools for ArcGIS on ArcGIS Pro it is required that you completely remove Military Tools for ArcGIS and perform a new install. To perform a new install, complete the following steps:

  1. Open ArcGIS Pro.
  2. Open Settings.

  3. Click Add-In Manager.
  4. Select Military Tools for ArcGIS.
  5. Click Delete this Add-In.
  6. Close ArcGIS Pro.
  7. Open ArcGIS Pro.

  8. Close ArcGIS Pro.
  9. Open the folder that corresponds to your version of ArcGIS Pro in the ArcGIS Pro folder.
  10. Double-click the MilitaryToolsforArcGISPro.esriAddinX file.
  11. Click Install Add-In.

    The Installation Succeeded window appears.

  12. Click OK.
  13. Start ArcGIS Pro.

    The Military Tools tab is added to ArcGIS Pro.

Install the add-in for ArcMap

To install the Military Tools for ArcGIS add-in in ArcMap, complete the following steps:

  1. Open the folder that corresponds to your version of ArcMap in the ArcMap folder.
  2. Double-click the MilitaryToolsforArcMap.esriAddin file.
  3. Click Install Add-In.

    The Installation Succeeded window appears.

  4. Click OK.
  5. Start ArcMap.
  6. Click Customize > Toolbars and click Military Tools to ensure Military Tools is checked.

    The Military Tools toolbar is visible.

Install the toolbox for ArcGIS Pro

To install the Military Tools toolbox for an ArcGIS Pro project, complete the following steps:

  1. Locate the Geoprocessing folder and ensure its contents are copied locally.

  2. Start ArcGIS Pro.
  3. In the Catalog pane, right-click Toolboxes > Add Toolbox.
  4. In the Add Toolbox window, browse to the Geoprocessing folder copied locally in step 1 and select Military Tools.pyt.
  5. Click OK to add the Military Tools toolbox to your project.

Install the toolbox for ArcMap

To install the Military Tools toolbox for ArcMap, complete the following steps:

  1. Locate the Geoprocessing folder and ensure its contents are copied locally.

  2. Start ArcMap.
  3. In the Catalog pane, click the Connect to Folder button.
  4. In the Connect to Folder window, browse to the Geoprocessing folder copied locally in step 1.
  5. Click OK to create a folder connection to the Geoprocessing folder.
  6. Expand the Geoprocessing folder in the Catalog pane to see the Military Tools toolbox.

Install the Python package for ArcGIS Pro

To install the Military Tools toolbox as system tools in ArcGIS Pro, complete the steps below.:

Create a new environment

The Military Tools toolbox is installed using the Python Package Manager in ArcGIS Pro.

  1. Start ArcGIS Pro and create or open a project.
  2. On the Project tab, click Python to access the Python Package Manager.
  3. Under Project Environment, click Manage Environments.
  4. Click Clone to open the Clone Environment dialog box.

  5. Name your new environment.
  6. Provide a path for where to store your new environment.
  7. Click Clone.

  8. Switch the new environment to Active, and click Close.

Install the militarytools Python package using the Python Package Manager

After setting up your environment, install the militarytools Python package.

  1. In the Python Package Manager, click Add Packages to view the Python packages available for installation.
  2. In the Search box, type militarytools to find the Military Tools toolbox.
  3. Select the militarytools package and update the version by clicking the drop-down arrow.
  4. Click Install to open the Install Package dialog box.
  5. Review the terms and conditions and check the check box to agree. Click Install to install the package.
  6. Once complete, close ArcGIS Pro.

    The next time you start ArcGIS Pro, the Military Tools toolbox will be installed and can be accessed in the geoprocessing toolboxes.

Install the militarytools Python package on a disconnected machine

You'll use the Python Command Prompt to install the militarytools Python package from a location on your computer.

  1. Ensure that ArcGIS Pro is not open.
  2. Open the Python Command Prompt window.
  3. Type conda install [location of the .tar.bz2 file] --verbose and press Enter.
  4. When the installation is complete, close the Python Command Prompt and start ArcGIS Pro to confirm that the Military Tools toolbox has been added.
