Customize the application

There are two ways you can customize ArcGIS Pro Intelligence. One is to add project templates to the start page, and the second is to change the background of the start page. Adding project templates to the start page that contain items such as basemaps, data connections, tools, and models specific to your organization increases user productivity; the user clicks the project template and everything in that template is opened in ArcGIS Pro Intel ready to use. Changing the background of the start page gives a custom look to the application specific to your organization.

Create a project template

Once you have created a project containing everything you want in a project template, complete the following steps to create the project template:

  1. In ArcGIS Pro Intel, in the Share group on the Disseminate tab, click Template > Create Project Template.

The Create Project Template pane appears.

  2. Choose Save Template to File, and provide information in Item Details for the project template.
  3. Click Analyze to check for problems.

Errors and warning are listed on the Messages tab. Right-click a message to open its help topic or take corrective action in the software. Errors must be resolved before you can create the project template. Resolving warnings is recommended but not required.

  4. Once validated, click Create to create the project template.

Add project templates to the start page

To incorporate the project templates so they appear on the ArcGIS Pro Intel start page, complete the following steps:

  1. In your user profile Documents folder, create a folder named ArcGIS Pro Intelligence.
  2. In the ArcGIS Pro Intelligence folder you just created, create a folder named projecttemplates.
  3. Copy your project templates to the Documents\ArcGIS Pro Intelligence\projecttemplates folder.
  4. Optionally, copy a .png file for each project template into the same folder to replace the default icons for your project templates.

The icons must have the same names as the project template files, including the .aptx file extension. For example, if the project template is named IntelTemplate.aptx, the icon must also be named IntelTemplate.aptx.png.

The optimal resolution for .png files is 32x32 pixels.

  5. Close and restart ArcGIS Pro Intel for the changes on the start page to take effect.

Your project templates appear in the Project Template section of the start page.

Create a custom background

One of the ways you can customize ArcGIS Pro Intel is to change the background of your start page to one that represents your organization. This gives the end user a visual cue as to what your organization is about. Creating a custom background is not difficult, but it does entail planning, patience, creativity, and a basic image editing application (such as Microsoft Paint 3D or TechSmith SnagIt Editor). The general process is outlined below, but you can expand this to make something truly unique.

  1. Determine the resolution of your target display.

For most current LCD displays, you may see a recommended resolution of 1920x1080.

  2. Create an image in your image editing application using a canvas size that matches the resolution of the target display.
  3. Set a background color, insert your organization's logo, and add other sketches, drawings, and elements to the image.
  4. Save the image as a .png file in a local folder.

Make a few images as samples to test the placement of the elements in your image.

  5. Choose one of the .png files and rename it background.png.

Add a custom background to the start page

To incorporate your custom background image so it appears on the ArcGIS Pro Intel start page, complete the following steps:

  1. In your user profile Documents folder, create a folder named ArcGIS Pro Intelligence.
  2. In the new ArcGIS Pro Intelligence folder, create a folder named backgroundimage.
  3. Copy the background.png file to the Documents\ArcGIS Pro Intelligence\backgroundimage folder.
  4. Close and restart ArcGIS Pro Intel for the changes on the start page to take effect.

Your custom background image displays on the start page.

Tips for custom backgrounds

Keep the following in mind when working with custom backgrounds:

  • If you change the size of the start page, the image stretches to fit it, and may look distorted.
  • The resolution of the chosen image impacts how the image appears. Higher-resolution (300 dpi) images look better than lower-resolution (96 dpi) images, especially on large screens.
  • Logos look best in the upper left or upper right corner of the image, as the project template and project carousel take up the middle of the image.
