Frequently asked questions

Listed below are common questions about the ArcGIS Solutions Deployment Tool.

Can I deploy a solution in a completely disconnected environment?

No, the tool requires anonymous access to ArcGIS Online.

Is this the only way I can deploy an ArcGIS Solution?

No, the solution help will also document the process for manually deploying the ArcGIS Solution. This process will typically require publishing the feature layer(s), creating a web map, and configuring a web application.

How can I change the spatial reference of the feature layers that are being deployed?

By default the output spatial reference of any feature layers created with the solution will be Web Mercator Auxiliary Sphere. The output coordinate system used when creating new feature layers can be changed from the ArcGIS Solutions Deployment Tool options menu.

Is data copied over with the feature layers?

No, empty feature layers are created for the solution. If the solution requires the layer have data, additional steps are provided in the task to assist with loading your data.

What is the default extent of the web maps and applications being set to?

The default extent of the ArcGIS organization is used when a new web map or application is created as part of the deployment.

How do I use my organization's default basemap instead of the web map provided with the ArcGIS Solution?

By default any web maps created during deployment will use the basemap originally configured for the solution. To use your organization's default basemap instead enable Use Organization's Default Basemap from the ArcGIS Solutions Deployment Tool options menu.

What does the green check mark next to the ArcGIS Solution mean?

A green check mark next to a solution means the solution is deployed in your organization. Clicking this icon will open a web browser to the item details of the solution. If you are an admin in the organization, you will see all solutions deployed in the organization. If you are not an admin, you will see all solutions that you are the owner of and solutions owned by other users that have been shared with the organization.

What does the blue info icon next to the ArcGIS Solution mean?

A blue info icon next to a solution means a new version of the solution is now available. You can select the solution and click the Deploy button to deploy the new version in your organization.

When I deploy an ArcGIS Solution I see a red X next to the solution, what does this mean?

A red X icon next to a solution means the deployment failed. By hovering over the error icon you will receive a tooltip providing more information for why the deployment failed. In some cases attempting to deploy the solution again will complete successfully. If after multiple attempts it still fails, please contact Esri Support Services.

Can I use my existing layers/data in the web maps and applications created by the deployment tool?

New feature layers will be created during the deployment of an ArcGIS Solution if the feature layer has not already been deployed in the organization as part of another ArcGIS Solution. Feature layers that are shared across ArcGIS Solutions will only be deployed once in the organization as long as the Use Existing Items in the Organization option is enabled. This option is enabled by default.

Can I create a duplicate version of the solution in my ArcGIS organization?

By default if an item has already been deployed in the organization it will not be recreated when deploying a new item. If you need to create a duplicate version of a solution in your organization disable Use Existing Items in the Organization from the ArcGIS Solutions Deployment Tool options menu.

How can I capture GPS metadata for point features when editing with ArcGIS Collector?

To add GPS metadata fields to new point feature layers created during deployment, enable Add GPS Metadata Fields from the ArcGIS Solutions Deployment Tool options menu. Once deployed ArcGIS Collector can write GPS metadata to the respective fields when editing point features.
