Explore the Template

The Engagement Area template comes with a number of different layers that allow you to build your own plan. The template contains a single map and layout, and examples of each layer.

To explore the template, complete the following steps:

  1. Examine the Fires Group Layer
    • The Fires group layer contains point, line, and polygon layers for features that would be applied in planning and integrating indirect fires.
    • Includes features such as target points, linear targets, and no fire areas.
  2. Examine the Obstacles Group Layer
    • The Obstacles group layer contains point, line, and polygon layers for features that would be applied in integrating friendly obstacles into a defensive plan.
    • Includes features such as minefields, concertina wire, and tetrahedrons.
  3. Examine the Direct Fire Weapons and Positions Group Layer
    • The Direct Fire Weapons and Positions group layer contains point, line, and polygon layers for features that would be applied in planning and integrating the location of weapons systems, including individual units and equipment.
    • Includes features such as battle positions, friendly units and equipment, and tactical mission graphics.
  4. Examine the Where to Engage the Enemy Group Layer
    • The Where to Kill the Enemy group layer contains point and polygon layers for features that would be applied in planning the location of where the enemy will be engaged.
    • Includes features such as target reference points, engagement area boundaries, and kill box areas.
  5. Examine the Enemy Group Layer
    • The Enemy point, line, and polygon layers for features that would be applied in determining the enemy’s scheme of maneuver.
    • Includes features such as enemy units, control measures, and operational graphics.
  6. Examine the Key Terrain Group Layer
    • The Key Terrain group layer contains polygon layers for friendly and enemy key terrain.
    • Includes area of interest, key terrain, and defensible terrain.
  7. Examine the Boundaries Group Layer
    • The Boundaries group layer contains a single line layer representing unit boundaries.
    • Includes a line feature that delineates surface areas for the purpose of facilitating coordination and deconfliction of operations between adjacent units, formations, or areas.
  8. Examine the Measurements Layer
    • The Measurements layer is a layer for dimension features. Dimension features are a special kind of geodatabase annotation for showing measured distances on a map.
