Operational impact generation

Operational impacts are generated by applying a remap function within the raster function. Each of these remaps applies the parameters as set out in the operational thresholds table.

Updating an existing operational impact parameter

Operational impact parameters are specific and are held within each of the raster functions. To edit these parameters, the raster function must be opened and the values within the remap function changed. This can be done by:

  1. Opening the relevant raster function through ArcMap.
  2. Double click on the remap function.
  3. Change the minimum and maximum values for each of the outputs. 0 is favorable -2 is unfavorable.
  4. If the value change is a replacement of values to make it more appropriate for your uses, click Save. If it is a set of alternative parameters, click Save As.

If the operational impact parameters have been updated

Once an operational impact has been edited and the raster function saved, it has to be reassociated with the mosaic dataset for the updates to take effect. This is covered briefly below and in more detail here.

  1. Open the properties of the mosaic dataset.
  2. Remove the raster function you edited.
  3. Load in the new updated raster function. Click OK.
  4. Close and reopen your map document or bring the mosaic dataset back into your map document to see the updates.

Creating a new operational impact parameter

Operational impacts are parameter specific. The operational impacts in the example raster functions contain remap raster functions applied to relevant variables. To create new operational impacts, follow the steps below:

  1. The raster function to extract the relevant variables must already exist.
  2. Additionally, a remap function will need to be applied to symbolize the values using the provided ForecastOperationalImpact.lyr file.
  3. Add the remap function by right-clicking the function chain below where you want it added and inserting the remap raster function.
  4. Set the minimum and maximum values for the raster function.
  5. Once the function has been saved, add it to the mosaic dataset as covered below.

If a new operational impact has been created

If a new operational impact raster function has been created, add it to the mosaic dataset using the following steps:

  1. Open the mosaic dataset properties.
  2. Load the new operational impact raster function. Click OK.
  3. Close and reopen your map document or bring the mosaic dataset back into your map document to see the updates.
