Add new roads

Road centerlines are line segments representing centerlines of all roadways or carriageways within the jurisdiction of a local government. Typically, this information is compiled from orthorectified aerial imagery. This representation of road centerlines supports address geocoding and mapping. It is also a resource for the agencies responsible for the active management of the road network.

The feature classification and type schema for the road centerlines is based on functional classification of roads as adapted from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Specific attributes and default values vary for each feature type.

To add new road centerlines, complete the following steps:

  1. Start an edit session.
  2. In the Create Features window, click a road type feature template.
  3. Click the Create Road and Split Intersecting Road construction tool.

This construction tool splits any existing roads that are intersected by the new road. The address ranges of the intersected roads are prorated based on the length of each new road segment.

  4. Add the new roads to the map. Draw the new roads in the direction of ascending addresses.
  5. Fill in the feature attribute for the new roads.
  6. Save your edits.
