Validate your basemap data

Data Reviewer for Basemaps contains quality control checks that can be used to assess the quality of basemap data.

Batch jobs (*.rbj) are quality control models that encapsulate validation information to be run against a data workspace. They are easily distributed and help ensure the use of consistent checks when validating data so that it conforms to your organization's specifications.

To validate the basemap data, complete the following steps:

Start a Reviewer session using MapsandGeodatabase\DataReviewer.gdb for Data Reviewer for Basemaps as a Reviewer workspace and name your Reviewer session Basemap Batch Validation. Set the spatial reference to NAD_1983_HARN_StatePlane_Illinois_East_FIPS_1201_Feet (US Feet).

Note:

If you are using ArcGIS 10.4 Data Reviewer or ArcGIS 10.5 Data Reviewer, follow the steps in this Start a Reviewer session topic. The spatial reference selected for the Reviewer workspace should match the spatial reference of the data you are validating. This allows the error geometry to be stored in the feature classes within the Reviewer workspace. Since the default spatial reference uses the active data frame, which is WGS_1984_Web_Mercator_Auxiliary_Sphere, you want to set the spatial reference to match the data's spatial reference, which is NAD_1983_HARN_StatePlane_Illinois_East_FIPS_1201_Feet.
Click the Reviewer Batch Validate button on the Data Reviewer toolbar, and in the Batch Validate dialog box, do the following:
- In Features to Validate, choose Full Database.
- Click Add from File, browse to the Data Reviewer for Basemaps Application folder. Choose the folder for your version of ArcGIS, and select the Basemaps batch job.
- In the Batch Jobs area, uncheck the Duplicate Geometry, Geometry on Geometry, and Polygon Sliver group check boxes.

  If the Duplicate Geometry, Geometry on Geometry, and Polygon Sliver groups are enabled, the batch job may take several minutes to run because of the amount of features being checked in each check group. For the purpose of this tutorial you will not execute these checks.
- Click Validate All and click No when prompted to add datasets to the current map.

  The batch job was designed to perform quality control checks on all basemap data within each map document delivered as part of ArcGIS for Local Government. Since not all feature classes are in the General Purpose map document, the Open Missing dialog box appears giving you the option to add those missing data sources to the map document. By not adding these datasets to the current map, the batch job identifies the missing data with exclamation marks.
- Click Run.

Click OK. When batch validation is finished, the Table Writer dialog box will appear indicating the number of records that have been written to the Reviewer table.
Group Reviewer table records by Source and Check Title.
Generate Reviewer table statistics, name the file Basemap Review Statistics, and save it to the MapsandGeodatabase Data Reviewer for Basemaps folder. The report automatically opens so you can review a summary of the errors based on your grouping.
In the Reviewer table, expand Source : RoadCenterline and Check Title : Road Centerline Full Name Must Not Be NULL Or Blank.

Double-click the first record to zoom to the error record.

Note:

The Road Centerline feature Full Road Name field is NULL. To see the road, check the check box next to Campus group layer.
Start an edit session.
Open the Attributes window and change Full Road Name to Stonehaven Cir.
Stop editing and save edits when prompted.
Right-click the on error record and choose Enter Correction Status. Update the error record correction status, by doing the following:
- Set the Update Status to Resolved.
- Type Full Road Name added as your correction explanation and click OK.
- Scroll to the right side of the Reviewer table to see the updated correction status.

Click Options > Report and do the following:
- From the Select report list, choose Automated Check Report By Group.
- Save the report in the MapsandGeodatabase for Data Reviewer for Basemaps folder and name the file Basemap Check Report by Group. The report will automatically open in Microsoft Excel.

Stop the Reviewer session.
