Numbering Features

The Structures layer is intended to identify all free-standing structures by priority (Primary, Secondary, Tertiary). However, it might be useful to systematically number these structures for consistency and easy identification. The Number Features geoprocessing tool designed specifically for this task. By default, these features will be numbered starting with the upper leftmost and ending with the lower rightmost. It is important to note that this tool could be used for any point feature class (i.e. Perimeter Defense), but these instructions are written for numbering buildings.

Running the Number Features Tool

  1. Within the Compound Map toolbox, open the Number Features tool.
  2. For the Area To Number field, click and draw a rectangular area around the features that you will have numbered.
  3. Under Point Features, select the feature class from the map that will be used for this tool.
  4. Set the Field to Number in which the calculated numbers will be stored.
  5. The Output (Numbered Structures) field only needs to be filled in if you wish to create a new feature class containing only the numbered results. If this is left blank, then the input feature class will be overwritten.
  6. Click OK.
