Create a call frequency map

Cell Phone Analysis can be used to create a call frequency map. This information is helpful for law enforcement personnel during search and rescue or investigative activities. The call frequency map is created by identifying the cell phone used base on the antenna use records from the cell phone provider.

To create a map of cell phone calls for each of the cell sites, complete the following steps:

  1. Optionally, in the Catalog window, browse to your workspace for your current case and create a geodatabase in this directory. Or use the geodatabase you created in Locate cell site.
  2. If you created a new geodatabase, create a feature dataset using a local projected spatial reference system. All output datasets from the tools used in this workflow will be created here using this spatial reference system. For the Naperville data, use NAD_1983_HARN_StatePlane_Illinois_East_FIPS_1201.
  3. In the Catalog window, and double-click the Relate Calls to Sites tool.
  4. In the Call Detail Records parameter, browse to the Application folder and select the calls.csv file.
  5. Click the Cell Site Sector drop-down menu and click the Cell Sectors layer.
  6. Click the Antenna Azimuths drop-down menu and click the Cell Antenna Azimuth layer.
  7. Click the Sector Lines drop-down menu and click the Cell Sector Lines layer.
  8. In the Feature Dataset parameter, choose the feature dataset created previously and click Add.
  9. Click OK.
  10. In the Table of Contents window, turn off all the layers except Cell Sites and the basemap.
  11. In the Catalog window, browse to the feature dataset created previously and drag the CallSummary feature class onto the map.
  12. Double-click the CallSummary layer in the Table of Contents window to open the Layer Properties dialog box.
  13. On the Symbology tab, click Graduated Colors under the Quantities field.
  14. Click the Import button.
  15. Browse to the MapsandGeodatabase folder and choose the Call Summary layer file.
  16. Match the symbology using the CALLFREQUENCY field.
  17. Click Add and click OK twice to return to the map to view the summarized call frequencies.
