Collect an exposed pipe

Gas utilities are required to inspect pipelines that are exposed to the atmosphere in order to ensure the integrity of the structure. Exposed Pipe Collector is designed to be used to collect exposed pipes using a mobile device. Follow the steps below to understand the software/application requirements and learn to collect an exposed pipe using a mobile device and ArcGIS Collector.

Software Requirements

To use Exposed Pipe Collector requires specific software and applications for each field technician in your organization. Below is the software required:

  • ArcGIS organizational account
  • ArcGIS Collector

Inventory

Once you have verified that the device you will be using includes the required software and have access to your ArcGIS organization, you can use the Exposed Pipe Collector map to collect exposed pipe in the field.

To collect a exposed pipe in the field, complete the following steps:

  1. Open Collector for ArcGIS and sign in using your ArcGIS organizational account.
  2. Once signed in, you will be presented with all the maps that you have access to. Search for exposed pipe to find the Exposed Pipe Collector map.
  3. Select the Exposed Pipe Collector map's thumbnail to open it. If you have enabled location services, the map will open to your current location.
  4. Collect a new feature, selecting the exposed pipe editing template.
  5. Update the attributes of the exposed pipe.
  6. Browse to the map, and select Stream. As you walk the length of the exposed pipe, you will see your points collected to create the line. If walking the exposed pipe length is not possible, you can manually add the line to the map. Map search in Collector for ArcGIS
  7. When you have finished recording the exposed pipe's attributes and geometry, click Submit.
