Submit a report

You will assume the role of a member of the general public setting out on a dayhike in a local park. You will use the Citizen Science Reporter application to submit observations along the way.

  1. Use your smartphone to scan a QR code from the park information kiosk, trailhead sign, or park website. When prompted, install the Survey123 field app from your device's app store and open the Citizen Science survey.
  2. After observing a plant or animal along the trail, use the app to choose a tile representing the category of your observation and tap the arrow at the bottom of the app to continue to the next question.
  3. To the best of your ability, choose the tile that represents the type of organism you have observed as well as how the observation was made. Tap the arrow at the bottom of the app to continue to the next question.
  4. If you know the species or common name of the organism, provide it, and optionally fill out additional details about the observation. Tap the arrow at the bottom of the app to continue to the next question.
  5. Take or upload a photo or audio recording (for audio observations) of the organism. This will be used to help verify your report. Tap the arrow at the bottom of the app to continue to the next question.
  6. Tap the map to provide the location of your observation and provide the date and time of the observation. Tap the arrow at the bottom of the app to continue to the next question.
  7. Provide any additional information about the observation that could be helpful in verifying the reported organism. Tap the arrow at the bottom of the app to continue to the next question.
  8. Optionally, provide your name and email. When this information is provided, the report will be counted towards the top contributor ratings in the Citizen Science Dashboard.
  9. Tap the checkmark at the bottom of the app and choose when you would like to submit the survey. If you are working disconnected, you will have to submit the report when you regain connectivity.
