Create a street index

Fire Run Book can be used to create a map book for each station or for the entire district. In large fire districts it may be more manageable to create a fire run book for the response area of each fire station. Units assigned to another station or mutual aid partners can share their fire run books as needed.

To build an index for your fire run book, complete the following steps:

  1. In the FireRunBook_Landscape.mxd or FireRunBook_Portrait.mxd map documents, select the Fire Map Index grid features for a fire station response area. These should be the same features selected when exporting the map pages.
  2. Open the Create Street Index Report tool from the Map Book toolset, in the Local Government toolbox found at MapsandGeodatabase\LocalGovernment.tbx.
  3. Click the Street Layer drop-down menu and click the layer containing the road centerline features.
  4. Click the Street Name Field drop-down menu and click the field containing the street names.
  5. Click the Index Layer drop-down menu and click the layer containing the index features.
  6. Click the Index Name Field drop-down menu and click the field containing the page names.
  7. Click the Page Orientation drop-down menu and click the orientation of the map book.
  8. Click the Street Index Output Name parameter and browse to Application\Output folder and type the file name for the PDF document.
  9. Optionally, to include address values check the address fields check box.
  10. Optionally, to include city names, click the City Field drop-down menu and choose the field containing the city names.
  11. Optionally, to include commonly known places such as shopping centers, churches, and municipal buildings in the index, click the Common Places drop-down menu and click the layer containing these features. The FacilitySitePoint feature class contains many of these places. Choose the field containing the names of these features from the Common Places Field drop-down menu.
  12. Click OK. The index will be saved as a PDF document in the output location.
