The road layers managed in the Road Network Management solution are used in maintenance management and transportation planning workflows throughout a public works organization. Once published and shared with your ArcGIS Online organization, they can be used to author a series of focused maps that describe the physical and operational characteristics of your public road network.

The public works maps can consume services deployed using ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS for Server or ArcGIS Enterprise. The steps that follow will help you publish a service with the RoadCharacteristics.mxd and content contained in the FacilitiesStreets feature dataset.

To publish the Road Characteristics map and add it to ArcGIS Online, complete the following steps:

1. Publish the map as a hosted feature layer or as a feature service using ArcGIS for Server or ArcGIS Enterprise.
2. Sign in to your ArcGIS organization.
3. Browse to the service and edit the item details:
   • Title: RoadCharacteristics.
   • Thumbnail image: Your image.
   • Description: Public roads and their physical characteristics.
   • Tags: Public Roads, Speed Limit, Functional Class, Special Routes.
   • Editing: Keep track of who created and last updated features.
   • Export Data: Allow others to export to different formats.
   • Sync: Enable Sync (disconnected editing with synchronization).
4. Share the service with your organization.
